Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about our Mulch Services? If your answer isn't below please feel free to contact us.

  • Do your mulch installation services include garden bed weeding and edging?

Yes. Proper bed preparation is essential for a clean finish and optimal plant health. Before laying mulch, our crew clears active weeds, removes loose debris, and carves a defined edge along your garden borders. This edge contains the mulch neatly, prevents washouts onto your lawn or hardscapes, and gives your property a polished, professional look.

  • How thick should mulch be applied, and do you remove old mulch first?

We aim for a consistent depth of 2 to 3 inches, which provides optimal weed suppression and moisture retention without smothering plant root systems. We do not automatically scrape out old mulch unless it has accumulated too thick or shows signs of fungus/matted buildup. Instead, we cultivate existing layers as needed, layering fresh mulch on top to maintain proper total depth while keeping roots healthy.

  • Do you install weed barrier fabric underneath the mulch?

We are happy to install landscape fabric if you prefer it, but in our experience, we generally advise against it in live garden beds. Over time, organic debris and windblown soil settle on top of the fabric, allowing new weeds to take root anyway—often making future weeding more of a nuisance as roots tangle into the material. Additionally, fabric can restrict vital air, water, and organic nutrients from enriching the soil below. We find that deep mechanical bed edging, proper 2 to 3-inch mulch depth, and routine bed care provide much better long-term weed control and healthier plants.

  • What types and colors of mulch do you install, and how do I choose the right one for my home?

We supply and install premium, locally sourced bark and wood mulches in popular colors, including natural cedar, brown, red, and black. Beyond enhancing your home’s curb appeal, mulch acts as a protective blanket for your landscape—locking in soil moisture during summer heatwaves, regulating root temperatures, and naturally suppressing aggressive weeds. During your quote, our team can help you select the ideal mulch type and color to complement your home's exterior finishes and plant varieties..

  • How often should mulch be refreshed or replaced?

We recommend refreshing your mulch once a year, typically during a spring property cleanup. Over 12 months, natural sunlight, rain, and foot traffic cause organic mulch to fade in color and break down, which reduces its ability to hold soil moisture and suppress weeds. A fresh 1 to 2-inch top-up each spring restores vibrant color, locks in soil hydration ahead of summer heat, and keeps your garden beds looking crisp and well-maintained year-round.
